Saints survive with one-point win

LORAIN — Southview overcame a dominant performance from Maple Height’s Dom Flewellyn, and a first half deficit to edge out the Mustangs Friday night, 79-78, in Lake Erie League play.

Flewellyn, who finished with a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds, nailed a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to pull the Mustangs to within one at 79-78. The Saints Jeremiah Frymier was fouled on the ensuing inbound and went to the free throw line for a double bonus with five seconds to go.

After making four free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, Frymier misfired on both attempts and Arnell Coleman grabbed the rebound for the Mustangs, who had no timeouts left. Coleman tried to pass the ball up court, but A.J. Craighead and Angel Gomez forced Coleman to travel and give the ball back to the Saints with two seconds to go. After a Saint timeout, Mike Davila inbounded the ball to Gomez, who dribbled out the clock for the victory.

“We just hung on,” Southview coach Andy Bastock. “They jumped in front of the kid who had the ball, and he wasn’t expecting someone to be there, so he jumped up in the air and traveled.

“Our kids knew the situation and wanted them to use as much clock as possible, so we wanted to pick it up as soon as possible and that kid just wasn’t expecting it.”

Gomez paced six Saints in double figures with 17 points, while Frymier (14), Craighead (12), Charles Fletcher (12), Brandon Davis (11) and Davila (10) all finished in double digits. Maple Height’s coach Phil Schmook said he was frustrated by all the mistakes his team made down the stretch.

“You can’t miss layups, you can’t throw the ball away from you when no one’s guarding you,” Schmook said. “You can’t let kids take the ball from you when you rebound the ball, you can’t jump in the air to make a pass.

“You can’t win games if you’re not mentality tough. You have to have an overall mean, competitive, spirit to want to win, and we don’t have that and Southview does.”

The Saints (9-5, 5-0) dug themselves in a hole, shooting 3 of 16 (18 percent) from the field, in the second quarter and trailed 37-31 at halftime.

Southview continued to fire away and quickly erased the deficit in the third quarter. A 3 by Dawan Cline gave the Mustangs a 40-31 advantage, which awoke the Saints offense.

Fletcher, who leads the team in scoring for the Saints, hit a 3 for his first points of the game to pull Southview within four at 40-36 with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Fletcher’s steal and layup put Southview ahead 49-44 and capped a 19-4 run. Another 3 by Fletcher and a layup by Craighead gave the Saints a 58-52 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Fletcher finished with 10 points in the quarter as the Saints outscored the Mustangs 27-15 , forced seven turnovers, and held Flewellyn to two points in the third quarter.

“The third quarter was the key,” Bastock said. “I was disappointed in the shot selection in the first half and that was discussed at halftime. Even defensively I didn’t think we were doing enough. We came out and outscored them by 12 in the third quarter and that really gave our kids confidence and put the game in our control.”

Flewellyn was the only Mustang (9-5, 2-3) to finish with double figures. Coleman and Cline each finished with nine points.

The Saints are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when they host Rocky River.
