AMHERST — After not playing his junior year at Amherst, senior Alex Obbey made his final home game a memorable one.
Obbey, who spent his junior year at the Premier Soccer Academy and has committed to play at the University of Louisville, matched a career-high with three goals in the first half to lead host Amherst to a convincing 7-0 non-conference win over Midview on senior night.
“It was nice because a lot of seniors got a chance to show what they can do,” Amherst Coach Brett Thompson said. “Even though some of them don’t normally play a lot, they got to play a lot and did some nice things.”
Amherst (10-2-3), who started the game with 11 seniors in its starting lineup, had plenty of scoring opportunities early on. However, they were unable to convert any of them.
It took sophomore Connor Klekota to break the scoreless tie. He was able to settle down a free ball in the penalty box and beat Midview goalie Brandon Beursken at the 21:39 mark.
“Normally once we get the first goal, more usually follow,” Thompson said. “With it being senior night, I think we came out over-energized and it took the goal to settle them down. We had a lot of chances.”
The goal only strengthened Amherst’s offensive push with Obbey being the benefactor.
The constant push caused Midview to commit a foul to give Amherst a free kick. Obbey set up 26 yards out and lofted his shot into the upper left-hand corner past Beursken for the goal to give Amherst a 2-0 lead at the 24:28 mark.
Obbey struck again just over four minutes later when a throw in by Klekota rolled through the penalty box with neither team able to settle it. The loose ball found its way to Obbey, who drilled it into the back of the net for the goal.
Amherst’s dominating first half play was capped with Obbey getting tripped by a Midview defender in the penalty box. He completed off his hat trick by converting on the penalty kick at the 37:25 mark of the first half.
“It felt good to come back for my senior and play with friends in a high school atmosphere,” Obbey said. “Once we were up 4-0, we played we more composed. We were controlling the ball and playing soccer like we know how we can.”
When he wasn’t scoring his was dishing thee ball.
Midway through the second half, Obbey’s corner kick went to Connor Klekota, who drilled it into there net from about 20 yards out to put any doubt to the outcome away.
After Obbey’s first half display, senior Brett Smith picked up where he left off. Smith capped off the scoring for Amherst with a pair of goals.
The first one came when he was able to settle down a free ball from inside the goalie box to score. Four minutes later, Smith tallied the final goal after taking a pass from Kale Klekota.
“I usually like getting the assists,” Smith said. “It felt good to score in front of the home crowd. It was a good way to end.”
The offensive barrage by Amherst was constant throughout the game, it was something Midview Coach Bill Lawton thought his team held its own for a period of time. However, it proved to be too much for Midview’s defense.
“Amherst is a great team with a ton of talent,” Lawton said. “Once, they started scoring it was tough to stop those guys when they get into motion.”
Amherst travels to Southview on Thursday for its final regular season game. Midview (1-10-4) will travel to North Ridgeville tomorrow.
