Baseball, softball tournament draws revealed

MORNING JOURNAL/JIM BOBEL The Keystone Wildcats celebrate winning the 2012 OHSAA Division II Softball State Championship 7-2 over Greenville last year in Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The brackets for the OHSAA state baseball and softball tournament were revealed on Sunday as all the schools in Ohio were seeded in their respective districts to decide who will be the state champion.

Last year, Westlake reached the Division I state championship game in baseball and Keystone won the Division II softball championship, with Elyria and Edison also reaching the state final four in softball.

Here is a quick preview of who will be facing who in each district.


Amherst earned the top seed in the difficult Lorain District in Division I and will face the winner of St. Edward-Olmsted Falls after a first-round bye. Lakewood and Midview each earned the other two byes as the Rangers will face the winner of North Olmsted-Elyria and the Middies will play the North Ridgeville-John Marshall winner. Last year’s state runner-up Westlake will play Southwestern Conference rival Avon Lake in the first round, while host Lorain will play Avon.

Sandusky will face Marion Harding in the first round of the Bowling Green District, with the winner meeting Norwalk in a sectional final.

In Division II, Perkins will begin its quest to avenge its district final loss as it has a first-round bye in the Archbold District and will play the winner of Port Clinton-Rossford at Toledo’s Mercy Field.

Firelands has a first-round bye in the Lorain District as it faces the winner of Padua-Collinwood. Vermilion also received a bye and will play the winner of Fairview-John Hay in the sectional final. Bay and Brookside will each play in the first round as the Rockets meet Rocky River and the Cardinals will take on Max Hayes.

In the Division III Heidelberg District, Edison will open its run in against Sandusky Bay Conference rival Margaretta in Bellevue, with the winner meeting New London. On the other side of bracket, Western Reserve will battle Huron in the first round.

In the Division III Parma District, Keystone has a bye and will play the Wellington-Oberlin winner in a sectional final. Columbia will host Black River in the sectional semifinal. The winner faces Elyria Catholic. Clearview faces Cleveland Central Catholic in another sectional semifinal in the Parma District.

In Division IV’s North Robinson District, St. Mary will await the St. Paul-South Central winner in a sectional final. Monroeville wlll meet conference rival Plymouth in the sectional semifinal.


Defending district and regional champion Elyria gets a first-round bye in the Division I North Ridgeville District and will play the winner of Olmsted Falls-Magnificat in the sectional final. Westlake and North Ridgeville also earned byes, and the Demons will play the Avon-North Olmsted winner while Amherst and Lorain will meet with the winner facing the Rangers in the sectional final. Avon Lake and Midview will meet in the sectional final.

In the Division I Tiffin District, Sandusky will play Marion Harding in the sectional semifinal, with the winner moving on to play Fremont Ross.

Keystone begins its state title defense as the No. 1 seed in the Division II LaGrange District. The Wildcats will have a bye to the sectional final where they will play the Rocky River-Padua winner. Vermilion also has a bye and will play the Firelands-Fairview winner in a sectional final. Clearview and Brookside will meet in a sectional final, and Bay faces Buckeye in a sectional semifinal.

Perkins will play Toledo Woodward and Norwalk will meet Oak Harbor in the Division II Buckeye Central sectional semifinals.

In the Division III North Ridgeville District, Wellington will meet Lutheran West in the sectional semifinal, with Columbia set to meet the winner. Oberlin and Elyria Catholic each have sectional semifinal games to open their postseasons as the Phoenix play Black River and the Panthers face Brooklyn.

State semifinalist Edison along with New London earned first-round byes in the Clyde District as the Chargers will play the Western Reserve-Fostoria winner and the Wildcats will meet the winner of Huron-Margaretta.

In Division IV, St. Paul will play South Central and Monroeville will play New Washington Buckeye Central in sectional semifinal play. St. Mary has a bye to the sectional final in the Fostoria District as it will face the Oregon Cardinal Stritch-Toledo Christian winner.
