Top 5 Tennis Players to Watch in 2013

Trevor Bowers (sr., Norwalk)

Playing first singles since his freshman year, Bowers has compiled a 92-6 lifetime record with a pair of state tournament appearances and three Northern Ohio League crowns. Last season, Norwalk’s first in Division I, Bowers missed state but swiped another sectional championship. In his final campaign with the Truckers, Bowers has a quality opportunity to lead Norwalk to its fourth consecutive NOL title and make another trip to state.

Nico Mostardi (fr., Avon)

Possibly the most intriguing competitor on the list, the freshman is poised to be the next standout player in the area, or even the state. He is ranked No. 1 in Northeastern Ohio Tennis in his age group (14’s) and No. 3 in the 16’s. Tabbed to play first singles by coach Art Gibbs, Mostardi will provide an Eagles squad that finished 5-11 last campaign with stability at the top of their lineup for the next four years.

Manickam Manickam (jr., Perkins)

The back-to-back First Team All-Sandusky Bay Conferece awardee made the state tournament his freshman year and districts last season. Playing first singles, Manickam anchors a Pirates team that went unbeaten in league play en route to capturing the SBC title in 2012. He was the Sandusky Invitational sngles champion and placed second at the SBC Championship. A similar season from Manickam in 2013 will go a long way to ensure Perkins walks away with another conference crown.

Chaz Hansen (sr., Vermilion)

The most dominant Division II player in the area in 2012, Hansen racked up 25 straight wins to record a perfect regular season. The Sailors’ standout also won the first singles title at the WSC and LCAAA tournaments on his way to a second consecutive appearance at districts. This year Hansen has his eyes set on his first state tournament.

Caleb Mayer (jr., Lake Ridge)

Mayer spearheaded Lake Ridge’s 14-3 output and second place finish overall at the LCAA Tournament last season. Lake Ridge coach Rich Robbins expects more of the same from Mayer in 2013 as he looks to make it back-to-back trips to districts.
