Perkins Pirates fall in state bowling quarterfinals

The Perkins Pirates made a good first impression as they reached the quarterfinals of the OHSAA Boys State Bowling Championships on Saturday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Perkins finished eighth in team qualifying, edging out Beavercreek by six pins to claim the final spot in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Fairport Harding awaited the Pirates in a best-of-five Baker games quarterfinal.

The Pirates were swept 3-0 as Fairport Harding won 179-148, 176-129 and 197-162.

Canfield won the state tournament, but the Pirates had plenty to be proud of in their first trip to the state tournament.

Junior Maxx Tamburrino finished sixth overall in individual competition, as he bowled a 642 series and rolled 200 or more in each of those three games. Kole Minton, Cole Lamarca and Ian Barnum finished just outside of the top 50, going 52nd, 57th and 61st respectively.

Fellow Sandusky Bay Area Bowling Conference team Huron also made its inaugural appearance at the state bowling tournament, but failed to qualify for the team championship round, coming in 12th with a score of 3,135.

The Tigers placed two bowlers in the top 50 led by sophomore Alex Winschel’s 631 series, good enough to put him in eighth place. Larry Pisano finished in 37th with a 563 series.

Vermilion sophomore Dylon Wilson, who qualified last week as an individual at the Warren District, came in 68th place out of 100 with a 485 series. He finished his series strong with a 183 game.
