Firelands Falcons beat Keystone Wildcats for second straight win (grid roundup)
Fresh off their first win of the season last week over Wellington, the Falcons defeated Keystone, 14-7 in Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division action.
The Falcons scored on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Joe Hyster to Jacob Parker in the second quarter and led 7-0 at halftime.
Firelands added another score on a Hyster 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the Falcons up, 14-0. The TD was set up on a 67-yard run by Hyster. Hyster led the Falcons with 158 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Keystone cut the deficit to a touchdown on a 43-yard TD pass from Kobe Whalen to C.J. Conrad at the 4:26 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats stopped the Falcons on their next possession and got the ball back and had a chance for a game-tying drive, but on a fourth-down-and-10 play, Whalen’s pass fell incomplete.
“We’re starting to come into our own,” Firelands coach Mike Passerrello said. “The kids never quit and our defense never gave up.”
Keystone (3-4, 2-2) travels to play Wellington next Friday, while Firelands (2-5, 2-2) will host Buckeye.
Maple Heights 40, Lorain 35: The Titans made a comeback on the road in Lake Erie League action, but fell short, losing for the second straight week.
Lorain (2-5, 2-2) will host Euclid next Friday.
Elyria 28, Cuyahoga Falls 14: The Pioneers doubled up the Tigers on the road in Northeast Ohio Conference action.
Elyria (5-2, 3-1) will host Stow-Munroe Falls next Friday.
Lakewood 24, Bay 8: The Rangers sent the Rockets to their fourth straight loss in West Shore Conference action.
Bay (2-5, 0-4) will host Rocky River next Friday.
Rocky River 33, North Ridgeville 16: The Rangers were routed on the road in WSC play, losing for the second week in a row after their only win of the season.
North Ridgeville (1-6, 1-3) will host Elyria Catholic next Friday.
Wellington 7, Black River 0: The Dukes scored just one touchdown, but it was enough as the Dukes shut out the Pirates in PAC action.
Wellington (2-5, 2-2) will host Keystone next Friday.
Buckeye 31, Brookside 16: The Bucks routed the Cardinals, keeping them winless on the season and in PAC play.
Brookside (0-7, 0-4) will host Black River next Friday.
Edison 27, Margaretta 7: The Chargers went above .500 and pulled even in the Sandusky Bay Conference with their win on the road.
Edison (4-3, 2-2) will host St. Mary next Friday.
St. Mary 34, Port Clinton 26: The Panthers won just their second game of the season, defeating the Redskins at home in SBC action. St. Mary (2-5, 1-3) travels to play Edison next Friday.
Oak Harbor 27, Huron 14: The Tigers lost their second straight game in SBC play, falling on the road.
Huron (4-3, 2-2) will host Margaretta next Friday.
Western Reserve 40, Crestview 15: The Roughriders stayed undefeated in the Firelands Conference with a win in Ashland over the Cougars.
Western Reserve (6-1, 4-0) travels to play at New London next Friday.
Monroeville 49, Mapleton 34: The Eagles won their second game of the season, and second in the FC with a win in Ashland.
Monroeville (2-5, 2-2) will host South Central next Friday.
